The Bar Confederation, its context and tradition

Rapperswil, 25-27 September 2008

Polish Museum

The year 2008 is the year of great celebration for the Polish Museum in Rapperswil.

The symbol of the Museum – the Column of Liberty – commemorating the Bar Confederacy has been the witness of the 140 years of presence of Poles in the Rapperswil Castle.

In 1868 thanks to the initiative of Count Wladyslaw Plater the column was placed in this small Swiss town in commemoration of the 100 years anniversary of the Bar Confederation.

Since then the column has welcomed all the guests to the hill of the castle with words: MAGNA RES LIBERTAS and has served as the symbol of Polish long-time struggle for the freedom of Poland as well as the symbol of good Polish-Swiss relations.

This year is also the 200th anniversary of the Museum’s founder and patron Count Plater’s birthday.

To celebrate the special anniversaries the Polish Museum has the pleasure to cordially invite you to the scientific conference: The Bar Confederation, its context and tradition.
